On our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

As a policy professional, our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation reminds me of the impact policy decisions have– hopefully helpful, too often deeply harmful. Residential schools were born from public policy intended to strip Indigenous children of their homes, families, languages, and cultures. For thousands of children, public policy cost them their lives.

As a mom, imagining my children being taken away is heart-wrenching, near incomprehensible. My kid was proud to share what he could understand of why he wore an orange shirt today. But he’s only six and (gratefully) equates school with fun, friends, and returning to his family at the end of the day.

This September 30th hits harder as I pursue a School Board Trustee nomination. With policymaking comes great responsibility. I want to do my part to make sure schools serve students, families and communities. We need to acknowledge our dark history and learn from it. To make amends as much as possible. And not only today, but always.
